New, one-trip or used: what actually differs

What the grades mean
A new container leaves the factory having never travelled. A one-trip has made a single voyage: a few scratches, no structural repairs. A used unit has served ten to fifteen years; a refurbished one is a used unit whose weak points have been repaired and repainted.
The deciding factor: visibility
If the container is visible to the public or will be fitted out, one-trip is worth it. If it is destined for storage at the back of a plot, refurbished delivers the same service for 30 to 40% less.
What to check when buying
- Door seal condition, the first point of ingress.
- The floor: swollen plywood signals an old leak.
- Locking bars and their hinges.
- The CSC plate, required for any later sea transport.
